As summer comes, Heidi feels like a bird in a cage. She misses the mountains more than ever before and doesn’t sleep well. At the same time, Miss Rottenmeier, who was working late at night in the library, hears noises and convinces herself that they have a ghost in the house. Her allegations scare Clara slightly and Mr Sesemann decides to stand guard the following night to clear the air.
In the dead of the night, Mr Sesemann hears noises too but when he tracks the supposed ghost, he finds out that it is actually Heidi sleepwalking. Everyone is stunned by the news, and they all realise how much Heidi misses her previous life.
To help her friend, Clara gets her to write a letter to Grandfather to invite him to stay in Frankfurt for a few days.
