Any mini Thomas Edison’s out there? Another everyday item that we tend to overlook is the lightbulb. How do we get light from flipping on a switch? Well, why not create your own at home and learn exactly how they work.
⭕MATERIALS:
- Small glass (around 1.50z)
- 2 battery cables (with double-end clips)
- Electrical tape
- Scissors
- Glass jar
- 2 D batteries
- Copper wire
⭕INSTRUCTIONS:
(1) Taking the first battery cable, tape it to the bottom of the glass. Make sure not to tape the clip as we will need this later.
(2) Repeat this with the second battery cable and leave the glass upside down.
(3) Now take the 2 batteries, tape them together + to - side.
(4) Cut a small strip of copper wire and place it in between the 2 clips that are secured to the small glass.
(5) Place the large glass jar over the smaller one. Make sure the other end of the wires is outside of the glass.
(6) Touch both clips to the ends of the D batteries and watch the wire glow.
⭕SCIENCE EXPLAINED:
When a light switch is turned on, electricity is sent from a power source to heat a filament. The batteries act as a source of power in which the electricity is sent through the cables and to the copper wire. This then heats the wire up until a glow is produced. Now you have made another simple circuit!
